Green - 99% is recyclable

Our batteries are 99% recyclable. A VisBlue battery is made up of parts that are easy to recycle and it is built for disassembly.

Most of the components in the VisBlue Battery Solution are made of different plastics and composites and are completely recyclable. The vanadium solution is non-degradable and will maintain its value throughout and beyond the life expectancy of the battery. This means that when the cell stack or the pumps in the battery have to be replaced after a certain number of years, the fluids can be reused in the same system or sold as raw material.

Long lifetime - 20+ years

The batteries are designed to last for more than 20 years.

Vanadium-based energy storage systems can theoretically last forever.

The active component - vanadium - is a rechargeable electrolyte that never wears out. This is because of the type of chemical reaction that is occuring in the process. The electronics and software that control the system can be upgraded, just like a computer. The last major component - the plastic tanks that contain the electrolyte - last for decades.

Safe - cannot burn or explode

Our batteries are safe to install in densely buily-up areas - they are actually safe to install anywhere.

Our battery consists of a vanadium-based solution containing water and sulphuric acid. Most of the solution is water (80-85%), which means that even in the events of short-circuiting, intense heat or high pressure, the battery is non-flammable. The battery will generate some amount of heat, but it will not exceed a level that is unsafe to touch.

Why solar?

The sun is our most important source of energy. The earth receives approximately 6,000 times as much energy from the sun as we use on earth today, therefore the sun must be recognized as an important source of energy. Important must also be seen in the light of the fact that solar energy is a green, renewable energy source. Today, most of the global electricity production comes from burning coal and gas. In this process, uncontrollable amounts of CO2 are emitted, which brings the earth's natural ecosystem out of balance. Therefore, we must resort to other energy sources, and here the sun is an obvious option.

Despite the significant potential, only approximately 5% of the earth's energy comes from the sun at present. An issue that may be decisive for the low interest in solar cells may be the changeable production of energy. The sun only shines during the day and the hours of sunshine can vary. Combined with consumption, which must often be a constant, this can pose a problem. In the evening, when the sun has set, a household must still be able to turn on the stove, heat water for the bath and turn on the TV. Therefore, there is a need to be able to store the solar energy.

Why wind?

Wind energy is a renewable energy source that has been gaining ground on the market in recent years. In Denmark alone, 40% of the energy came from wind energy in 2018. Like solar energy, wind energy is a green alternative to the traditional burning of coal and gas. Wind energy is therefore a structural measure that contributes to reducing CO2 emissions. Furthermore, during its lifetime, a wind turbine manages to produce 80 times as much energy as goes into the manufacture of the wind turbine itself. However, the wather can prove to be challenge in relation to the operation of the wind turbine. For the wind turbine to produce energy, the wind naturally needs to blow. If there is no wind, the turbine will therefore not produce any electricity, and if it is very windy, the wind turbine's production will exceed consumption. Therefore, there may be a need to store the energy, so that days with high winds can benefit days with low winds.

Why battery?

Renewable energy should form the framework for the future. However, solar cells and wind turbines are often subject to excess production in periods.

The extracted energy sometimes exceeds the consumption, which means that the excess energy must be sold to the electricity grid for a relatively low tariff.

But what if you could store the energy so that it can be used when the wind is calm or it is dark outside? With a battery solution from VisBlue, this can be done. In addition to being a battery that stores energy in the general sense, the battery also has four further significant advantages.

1. Security:
The battery is safe in the sense that it can neither burn nor explode. The energy is stored in an electrolyte liquid that consists of 85% water.

2. Environmentally friendly:
The battery consists of 99% recyclable material. Its major components (tanks, electrolyte fluid, pumps etc.) are in their own way recyclable.

3. Scalability:
The battery can be scaled to suit specific energy needs. A customized model of the battery can therefore be prepared to suit specific demands.

4. Price:
A comparison between the lifetime of the battery and the price of the battery will make it clear that storing energy for a minimum of 20 years will require a significant saving compared to alternative solution models/purchases throug hthe electricity grid.

Why lithium?

Lithium batteries are used in almost all electrical equipment and are characterized by being a compact energy solution that does not require much space.
However, the contents of a lithium battery are flammable, and especially with severe temperature changes and/or overload, the battery can spontaneously ignite. In addition, lithium batteries have a limited lifespan. Regardless of how frequently the battery is used, a lithium battery will lose 20% of its capacity on an annual basis and gradually decay.

Why lead?

Lead batteries are a relatively cheap battery to purchase and are the most common rechargeable battery worldwide.

However, lead batteries pose a major health and envrionmental hazard and must therefore be disposed of thoroughly and responsibly.

The battery also has a weakness for cold and can only be exposed to cold in a charged state, otherwise the battery capacity is reduced exponentially.

Why redox flow?

A redox flow battery is a different type of battery where the current is stored in two large tanks filled with liquid.

The flow battery has several advantages over conventional battery types, i.a. scalability and longer life, as well as being 99% recyclable and non-flammable. The lifespan is at least 20 years, but the battery often lasts longer. The only downside is the size of the battery.

However, this is a necessity since the energy is stored in a mixture of 85% water and 15% sulfuric acid mixed with the electrolyte vanadium.

What is kWh?

kWh stands for kilowatt-hours and is the unit used when we talk about electricity consumption. With kWh you get the actual amount of electricity used, whereas kW is simply a unit that indicates the effect. Therefore, we refer to kWh when we talk about consumption, and it will also be this unit that is indicated on the electricity bill.

Where do I find my kWh consumptions?

Your electricity consumption is indicated on the electricity bill. Here, you can see how many kWh you have used in a given period, which is offered at a specific rate from your electricity company. Several electricity companies also offer apps where you can monitor your electricity consumption on a daily basis.

Which data?

What data do we need?
• Extraction of the daily electricity consumption on an hourly basis over an entire year

Extracts can be obtained through your electricity company. If you have access to your consumption profile via app or user login on their website, you can log in and find your consumption information here. It is preferable that the data set is extracted in Excel.

Your electricity consumption is not evenly distributed over a day, which is why we request your daily electricity consumption on an hourly basis.

Furthermore, your electricity consumption is not necessarily constant over the 12 months of the year and therefore we make a calculation with data over an entire year. Thereby, a representative sample of your consumption is obtained and this makes our estimation of battery size more complete.
It is important for us to know how your consumption is distributed on an hourly basis over a year, as this is used to measure the size of the motor on the battery.

• Extraction of the daily electricity production on an hourly basis over an entire year

This information only applies to buildings with renewable energy sources (for example solar cells and wind turbines). This means that if your building does not have renewable energy sources, the size of the battery is estimated solely based on your electricity consumption, as there is no self-production of electricity to be taken.

The spread of electricity prices during the day and the night is big, and therefore the battery can also be used profitable as a storage bank for electricity from the electricity grid.
