In Børsen’s special publication Future of Energy, VisBlue contributes to the discussion on how the energy system can evolve in step with the green transition and increasing demands for security of supply. The article highlights energy storage as a key tool for both CO₂ reduction, economic optimisation, and stable, reliable operation for businesses and public institutions with their own renewable energy production.

As more buildings install solar panels, a structural challenge emerges: production often peaks in the middle of the day, when consumption is lower, meaning that a large share of the energy is fed into an already strained electricity grid. The article outlines how energy storage enables this electricity to be stored locally and used later, when demand, electricity prices, and CO₂ emissions are higher. With flow batteries in particular, this storage can be done without capacity degradation over time and with a lifespan that better matches both the building and the solar installation.

In his column, CEO Martin Gordon Andersen focuses on both the challenges and opportunities related to upcoming EU requirements for solar panels on larger public buildings. He emphasises that the challenge is not only to produce more green electricity, but to use it locally. When many buildings generate electricity at the same time, it can increase the pressure on the grid if the energy cannot be stored and used where it is produced.

Local energy storage is therefore highlighted as a concrete solution. Larger buildings such as schools, institutions, and residential developments often have both roof space and physical capacity for battery systems that can increase self-consumption, improve stability, and relieve pressure on the grid. The article points to the flexibility of flow batteries, where both power and energy capacity can be adapted and expanded over time as needs change.

Safety is another central theme. VisBlue’s water-based flow battery differs from lithium-based solutions by being non-flammable and free of critical raw materials. This means the system can often be installed directly in existing buildings without extensive fire safety measures, while still meeting insurance and safety requirements. The flow battery can also function as backup power during outages, increasing reliability in buildings with critical functions.

In the article, Torben Lohmann from Assens Municipality explains how these advantages, especially safety were decisive in choosing VisBlue’s flow battery:

"We initially looked at lithium, but it wasn’t an option as we wanted the battery installed indoors. VisBlue had a solution that matched our needs in terms of capacity, cost, safety, and sustainability, with more than 20 years of lifespan without capacity loss."
