The challenge
Skødstrupbakken was developed as a sustainable residential community, but like many other solar installations, its green electricity is typically generated in the middle of the day when residents are away from home and unable to use it. Without battery storage, large amounts of energy are wasted, and electricity must later be purchased back from the grid at a higher cost when residents return from work and peak demand periods occur.
The solution
AlmenBo Aarhus integrated the battery solution already during the construction phase, and with the support of residents, a VisBlue flow battery was installed. The battery stores solar energy and makes it available when demand is highest in the evening. This increases the utilisation of the solar panels, helps stabilise electricity costs, and supports the housing association’s goals for sustainability and safety.

The result
The hybrid system enables Skødstrupbakken to use a larger share of its self-generated electricity without increasing rent. It creates both economic and environmental value, while allowing residents to play an active role in driving the green transition in practice.
Through the local collaboration between VisBlue and Risskov Teknik & Solar, Skødstrupbakken stands as a strong example of how housing associations can incorporate sustainability and energy flexibility from the very beginning.
